Fall is the time of year when I most feel the pressure to get the words on the page and revise the stories that I allowed to languish all summer (or since last year). Maybe it’s because October is a black month (leaves begin to turn and die, the waning light, the chill in the air, Halloween, etc.). If I’m not careful, I’ll let the ennui set in and won’t get anything done.
This week’s links are like little shots of energy and motivation to keep me going.
- Rejection. All writers experience a form of it at some point. Courtney Maum praises hers and says that she’s glad it took her “10 years to write her darn book.
- “Why do some writers persist, and some writers – many of them the most talented and promising writers I’ve ever known– quit?” Kameron Hurley dares you to give up or get back to work.
- Writers! They’re just like us other writers! Ryan Holiday contemplates 24 Things That Only Writers Know (From Writers).
- Bobby Knight, the legendary basketball coach, had a wise saying: “Practice doesn’t make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect.” Joe Moore applies the same theory to writers in Writing Doesn’t Make You a Better Writer.
- “Does a writer love all of his published works as much as the day they were released — or as much as we on the outside expect him to? Or does he actually want to burn every copy each time he sees an open flame?” Six writers look back on their debut novels.
